101 deaths in 7 days while 13 more hospital beds are filled

Another 15 coronavirus patients died within the past 24 hours, matching the number of fatalities reported Monday, Yucatan health authorities said. That makes 101 fatalities the first seven days of July and 562 since the first death was reported in April.

Recoveries outnumbered daily infections by 12. New coronavirus cases reached 156, bringing to accumulated total to 5,415 since March. Doctors said 168 patients were declared free of the virus in the last 24 hours and the overall recovery remains nearly 73%.

Current patients include 576 in stable condition and recovering at home under quarantine. The remaining 334 patients are in the hospital, 13 more than the day before.

Infections included 79 in Merida; 23 in Ticul; 19 in Kanasín; and one listed as a “foreigner,” which could refer to either another state or country.

Other new cases included three each in Espita and Valladolid; two in Peto and Sinanché; and one each in Acanceh, Celestún, Chemax, Chichimilá, Chumayel, Conkal, Dzam, Motul, Muna, Opichén, Progreso, Samahil, Tahmek, Tekantó, Telchac Pueblo, Timucuy, Tinum, Tixcacalcupul, Tixkokob and Tzucacab.

A 23-year-old Merida woman who already had chronic kidney failure was the youngest woman to perish from COVID-19 in Yucatan. An 81-year-old Merida man with hypertension was the oldest patient to die. Those who died were largely in their 50s and 60s.
