Coronavirus hospitalizations in Yucatan at 122, death toll reaches 105

Two Yucatan Health ministry maps of Merida, one from April 26 and the other from May 13, show how coronavirus infections have spread in just two and-a-half weeks. The comparison was first made by a local man on Facebook.

A total of 122 people in Yucatan remain hospitalized, 11 more than Saturday, as doctors grapple with 31 new infections, authorities said.

The briefing from the health ministry announced three additional deaths out of a total of 1,125 confirmed coronavirus cases that began to accumulate just over two months ago.

Thirteen of the infections were in Mérida, two each in Tekom, Temozón and Yobaín and one each in Acanceh, Hocabá, Chemax, Kanasín, Muna, Oxkutzcab, Peto, Tecoh, Tinum , Tixpéhual, Tizimín and Umán.

Medical authorities estimate that over 4,000 people in Yucatan are actually carrying the virus, but testing doesn’t exist to verify that number.

Since the crisis began, 712 patients, or 63% of everyone found to be infected, recovered. A total of 105 pjeople have died since April 3.

In the past 24 hours, a 38-year-old Merida man perished, as did a 59-year-old Merida man and a 71-year-old woman from Chocholá. All had pre-existing conditions that complicated treatment, the ministry said.

Of the remaining positive cases, 186 patients are in stable condition and under home quarantine.

Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal has suggested the pandemic’s peak is yet to come in Yucatan, and the quarantine will last at least a few more weeks.
