Consumer spending up 10% at year’s end

End-of-year sales were particularly strong in Mérida. Circumstantial evidence included packed tour buses on the Paseo de Montejo, and totally booked venues at New Year’s Eve. Some restaurants were turning away customers on week nights.

Now, the Kanak-Servytur, the Chamber of Commerce, of Merida, has real numbers to back that up.

Over 18 billion pesos were pumped into the local economy from the first half of November to the end of the year, up slightly more than 10 percent from 2014.

That is double the growth projection that local economists had forecast.

The end-of-the-year is a make-or-break time for many stores. Merchants wait for Dec. 20, when workers will have received their Christmas bonuses, for a sales uptick. But sales were stronger than expected before that point.

Year-end numbers have been building since 2013.
