14m pesos spent rearranging the sand at Chuburna and Telchac
Yucatan state authorities are spending 14 million pesos to restore beaches in Chuburna and Telchac, where beach erosion is a constant problem.
The sand project follows studies by UNAM, the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal on Friday supervised the project in the shelter port of Chuburna, where the “bypass” channel was dredged, a benefit for fisherman who access the port there.
Construction of docks has worsened the erosion problem in some beaches, the governor was told during the tour.
Workers are using both fixed and floating 10-inch pipes, on floating platforms fitted with pumps, to transfer the sand from the channel to the beaches.
In Chuburna Puerto, the project includes the removal of 4,812 cubic meters of sand and 157 cubic meters of seabed, the placement of 180 linear meters of fixed pipe. In Telchac Puerto, the excavation of 1,312 cubic meters of sand and 90 cubic meters of seabed is planned for the installation of 120 linear meters of fixed pipe and another 1,000 meters of mobile floating pipe.
Public Works Minister Virgilio Crespo Méndez said the project will benefit 6,142 residents, and comes ahead of the season in which more “nortes” — windy storms from the north — are expected to batter the beach.
The work is estimated to be completed in October.
