Two celebrations at a new shopping center are an opportunity to see first hand how the city is evolving.

The U.S. electronics-store chain Best Buy plans a grand opening for its first store in Merida at 6 p.m. Friday, June 16. The new store is located in the Uptown shopping complex in Col. Altabrisa.

The new store is part of Best Buy’s expansion plan in Mexico. In April, the chain opened its 26th Mexican store at the Fortuna Shopping Center in the Lindavista area north of Mexico City.

At the same shopping center, the Hilton Garden Inn on Thursday, June 15, will celebrate its initial success a month and-a-half after it opened to the public. Officials say they have worked hard to reach occupancy levels of 55 to 60 percent.

The hotel is near the Star Medica hospital, giving it a built-in medical tourism clientele.

The opening will begin at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting and a tour of the 126-room property, which includes 12 suites. In the evening, a party will include a Martín López fashion show, music and a jewelry exhibition.

The Uptown shopping center also has a Walmart and a movie complex, among many other smaller stores.
