Merida, Yucatan —  A bus crossing the railroad tracks on Calle 60 Norte was struck by a train today.

Two were injured in the mishap, blamed on the bus driver who didn’t see the train or hear its whistle, along the Chuburna 21 route.

Train tracks in the city share ground-level space with cars and pedestrians and have the right of way. That means if you get hit by a train in Merida, it’s your fault.

According to injured bus passengers, the bus driver did not hear the locomotive’s whistle because he was wearing headphones.

“We shouted ‘There comes the train!,’ but he ignored us,” said a rider named Ruben.

The injuries were not serious, and were treated by SSP paramedics at the scene. State police closed the road while the scene was cleared.
