Hunucma, Yucatan — The local industrial park continues to expand as two new Japanese-owned auto plants have signed on.

At least 3,000 new jobs are expected to result from the deal.

Hunucma Mayor Alberto Padrón Romero said Monday that he is coordinating with the state government to accommodate the newcomers.

Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal will make a formal announcement, naming the companies that are said to manufacture automotive parts.

Last fall, a Japanse plastics manufacturer, Uchiyama, announced a new plant in Hunucma. The German-based wiring systems company, Leoni, is reportedly opening its third Yucatan plant in the area, as well.

A shopping plaza has also been started on a seven-hectare site for the community, which sits west of Merida. While it has manufacturing plants, like a brewery and a canning factory, the city is lacking consumer services such as banks, said the mayor.
