2024 Showcase of Homes celebrates Henry Ponce
The 14th edition of the Mérida Showcase of Homes focuses on one single architect, Henry Ponce, who is celebrating 30 years in business.
The self-guided tour, on Sunday, Nov. 24, aims to highlight not only the Historic Center but also the architectural richness of three traditional neighborhoods in Mérida: Itzimná, Col. México, and Alcalá Martín.
Ponce, who is also founder of the Yucatán Art and Design Center (CADY), noted that the selected homes represent a mix of avant-garde, innovative, and eclectic styles. Many of the designs draw inspiration from international capitals such as Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and Mexico City while also embracing elements of the modernist movement.
Ahead of the tour, CADY will host workshops and talks on Wednesday focusing on the modern architectural movement. These activities, targeted at architecture students, are part of a fundraising effort. Proceeds will support Amanc Yucatán, an organization dedicated to assisting children with cancer.
Tiky de Velasco, the other co-founder of CADY, said that Felipe Leal, an architect and urban planner from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), will give a talk on the need to revitalize forgotten neighborhoods.
Additionally, renowned Catalan architect Miquel Adrià will discuss the importance of the modern movement in preserving Mérida’s architectural identity. The colloquium, scheduled from 5 to 10 p.m., will include workshops and other activities for participants.
The day begins at noon and lasts five hours. Tickets (800 pesos for the general public and 600 pesos for students) can be obtained by contacting info@fundacionbai.mx. The tour will conclude in Col. Chuburná at CADY. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore Mérida’s architectural heritage while supporting a meaningful cause.
