Mérida, Yucatán — The convention center emerging in the hotel zone has stimulated investment in yet more hotels.

A little more halfway through 2017, the municipal Directorate of Urban Development has already authorized 21 hotel construction licenses.

Of those, 15 are new hotels with a combined 1,975 rooms, and six extensions or renovations at existing hotels incorporating 332 new rooms.

If all these projects are brought to fruition, Mérida will close 2018 with a total of 911 new rooms joining a swelling inventory of around 13,000. According to TripAdvisor, 103 hotels are already in operation, seven more than one year ago.

In addition, eight hotels have obtained land-use licenses or building permits, according to Aref Karam Espósitos, urban development director for the city.

Of the 29 hotels in development, 56 percent are in the Centro or along the Paseo Montejo. The rest are in the north, on the Periférico or at the airport.

Of these hotels, four have started construction, or are about to, he said.

One of the most notable projects would be a sister hotel to the Fiesta Americana. Grupo Posadas is planning a Live Aqua boutique hotel either at the Plaza Crystal, across from the Monumento a la Patria, or at the current United States Consulate site.
