Mérida, Yucatán — Three big projects — the maternity and children’s hospital, the Music Palace and the international convention center — are on or ahead of schedule, says Daniel Quintal Ic, secretary of Public Works.

Crews could be wrapping up as early as October, beating an end-of-year deadline, Quintal said.

The obra negra, structural work, is completed at the Hospital Materno Infantil, he said. Now workers are installing electrical, hydraulic, voice and data lines.

Construction on the hospital started in November 2015 and is now past 50 percent complete.

“In the case of the Music Palace,” he told Diario de Yucatán, “work is now being done on the casting of the floor tiles, they are about to start building the second floor, then the third, and the work on the exterior coatings will begin.”

Structural work is also complete at the hotel zone’s Internacional de Congresos de Mérida. Crews are now working on air conditioning lines and are planning work on the facades and finishes.

Construction there started in January 2016 and is more than half complete.

About 300 million pesos are being spent on building the Music Palace, a modernist museum that enshrines Mexico’s traditional music. Construction in the historic center, behind the Church of the Third Order, began in January 2016 and is also just over halfway complete.

Some 600 million pesos are being spent on the convention center and the largest amount, 1.2 billion pesos, is allocated to the hospital, he said.
