3 Hurt as Car Slams Into Ie-Tram Bus in Downtown Mérida
A Nissan Versa ended up facing oncoming traffic after colliding with an Ie-Tram bus at the corner of Calle 60 and Calle 51 in the heart of Mérida’s Centro on Monday, leaving three people with bumps and bruises, according to witnesses.
The Versa was traveling on Calle 51 and allegedly failed to stop at the intersection’s stop sign before being struck by the public transit vehicle, witnesses said. The force of the impact spun the car around, leaving it facing the wrong direction and wedged against a security bollard.
Among the injured was a 6-year-old girl, witnesses reported. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene, and the crash caused temporary chaos in one of the Centro’s busiest intersections.
Authorities said responsibility for the crash will be determined once accident reconstruction experts complete their review.
The collision is the latest in a string of traffic incidents on Mérida’s roads. We previously reported on rising accident numbers across the city, including 284 traffic deaths recorded on the ring road alone in 2024.
Monday’s crash was also covered by Azteca Yucatán, a local television outlet, which described the same sequence of events at the same intersection.
The Ie-Tram, an electric bus rapid transit line, is part of the city’s broader Va y Ven public transportation network, which has expanded steadily since 2021. The dedicated lanes running through downtown intersections have made stretches of the Centro busier with transit traffic in recent years.
Calle 60 and Calle 51 sit in the heart of Mérida’s historic downtown, a stretch of narrow one-way streets that draws heavy foot and vehicle traffic throughout the day. Traffic in the area was briefly snarled while crews cleared the scene and cordoned off the intersection for the investigation.
No further details on the condition of those injured, or whether citations were issued, were immediately available.
