Monday’s new infections and COVID-19 deaths were the same as Sunday’s: 56 new cases and six fatalities.

The Yucatan Health Ministry’s daily report indicated that since the coronavirus crisis began a little more than three months ago, 2,600 infections and 309 deaths have occurred in the state.

Those are the official tallies, but the real numbers are estimated by medical officials to be four times higher.

A 47-year-old Merida woman with hypertension and diabetes was the youngest to die. A 58-year-old woman from Mérida, a 61-year-old man from Tekax, a 64-year-old man from Umán, a 72-year-old man from Muna and an 85-year-old-woman from Merida also perished. All but one had pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes or obesity.

Since COVID-19 first came to Yucatan, 2,021 patients have recovered, including 15 in the past 24 hours, for a 78% recovery rate.

The 279 current patients are divided into two groups: 94 in stable condition and in home quarantine, and 176 in the hospital, six fewer than Sunday. It was not announced if those six are the same who died.

New infections included 23 found in Merida; five each in Tekax and Tizimín; four in Kanasín; three in Valladolid; two in Temozón, Ticul, Umán; and one each in Cacalchen, Chapab, Peto, Progreso, Teabo, Tecoh, Timucuy and Yobaín. Two new infections were found in people from outside the state.

More supplies

The Mexican defense department flew 6.5 tons of medical supplies and equipment, including personal protective gear, to the Merida airport. It will be distributed to hospitals across the Peninsula.

The cargo plane from Mexico City is the sixth to land in Merida to keep hospitals stocked with tools to fight the spread of coronavirus.
