New private hospital due in 2017

Mérida, Yucatán — Construction of the city’s seventh private hospital will begin in January north of the periférico, a mile north of the of the City Center mall.

A scale model of the nine-story Hospital Faro del Mayab was unveiled at a formal ceremony yesterday.

Private investors are pouring 500 million pesos into a hospital that will contain 66 hospital beds and five operating rooms, as well as an emergency room, blood bank, radiology center and intensive care unit. It will employ 375 people and generate 1,150 indirect jobs, officials estimate.

The hospital is scheduled to open in December 2017.

Officials cheered the project for furthering the region’s reputation as a medical tourism destination.

Faro del Mayab is part of the Mexico City-based Médica Sur Network, the only hospital chain in Mexico to boast a strategic alliance with the Mayo Clinic in the United States.

Mérida, with a metropolitan area population that has topped a million people. already has six private hospitals and seven public hospitals, and is widely regarded as one of the best cities in Mexico in terms of health services availability.
