Mérida, Yucatán — As of Dec. 12, all Six, Oxxos, Extra shops and other convenience stores will be allowed to sell alcohol 24 hours a day, according to an announcement from city hall.
The Christmas season is the most profitable time for businesses that sell beer, wine and spirits, and the city’s Chamber of Commerce asked Ministry of Health to loosen laws that require liquor stores to close at 5 on Sundays.
Mayor Mauricio Vila said that the measure will reduce illegal sales. Independent shops were not included in the new authorization.
