After a six-month delay, American Airlines’ Miami-Mérida flight is said to be a reality. The first arrival at the Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport is due Friday, June 2.

The first flight will arrive at noon with its 90 seats already sold. The return flight, also sold out, leaves Mérida at 1 p.m.

The direct route was first planned in December, but bureaucracy apparently stalled the launch of the connection between Florida and the Yucatán.

The new route improves connectivity between the Peninsula and the United States, joining Aeroméxico’s Miami-Mérida flight, which has a code-share with Delta Airlines.

Miami is an East Coast hub, easy to reach from New York City, Boston and Philadelphia. For travelers originating in Mexico, the Miami airport is also a link to the Caribbean, South America, Canada and Europe, noted Tourism Secretary Saúl Ancona Salazar.

During high season, flights will run seven days a week; five days a week in the low season. Tickets start at $380 USD, according to the airline.
