After public outcry, an ousted street musician returns to Izamal’s historic mercado

The music is back after local pressure and social media activism won a swift victory in Izamal’s historic Mercado Municipal.

The confrontation began when Izamal’s market director attempted to remove the musician, who has provided the soundtrack for diners and tourists in the market’s bustling food court for years. The official claimed the performer was blocking foot traffic, but locals immediately challenged him.

“The people have spoken,” said Marisol Ruiz, one of many residents who took to social media to defend the musician. “He’s not stealing — he’s part of what makes our market special. Officials should focus on real problems instead of harassing performers who bring joy to our community.”

Market vendors, who begin their days at 4 a.m., rallied behind the musician, explaining how his performances help create the vibrant atmosphere that draws visitors to this Yucatecan cultural landmark. The market, nestled beside the Ex-Convento de San Antonio de Padua in Izamal’s distinctive yellow-painted colonial center, has long served as a gathering place where local traditions flourish.

“[The manager] should worry about maintenance and his family’s stalls that actually block the corridors,” said Juan Carlos Dzul Chi, referencing allegations that some vendor families connected to market officials have encroached on public spaces. “Instead, he targeted someone who brings music and happiness to our market.”

The swift reversal of the removal order demonstrated the community’s ability to protect its cultural heritage. Luis Canul, another local resident, called for accountability: “The director should face consequences. This type of heavy-handed behavior deserves disciplinary action.”

The market continues to operate as a vital cultural crossroads, where the sounds of traditional music once again blend with the aromas of cochinita pibil and relleno negro, marking a victory for the preservation of local customs over bureaucratic interference.
