Airbnb advice: 5 things hosts removed from their rentals

Previously, we asked people for some expert Airbnb advice. The question was about income-property essentials to include in a rental home. Now, we’re learning what not to offer in a short-term Airbnb.

Here’s what they have removed and why:

  1. Personal Belongings: While some personality is great, guests should feel at home, not like they’re intruding. Replace family photos with meaningful decor or artwork that reflects your style without being overly personal.
  2. Puzzles and Games with Many Pieces: While entertainment is appreciated, puzzle pieces can frustrate guests and cleaners alike. Opt for simple card games in clear plastic boxes for easy storage.
  3. High-Pile Throw Rugs: Can you believe these even exist around here? They are difficult to clean and trap dirt, allergens, and even small objects. They are also a tripping hazard. Instead, choose low-pile, washable rugs that are easy to maintain and spot-clean.
  4. Sleeper Sofas and Air Mattresses: These options are often uncomfortable and unreliable, leading to guest complaints and poor reviews. Consider alternative solutions like daybeds with comfortable mattresses or simply limit occupancy if space is limited.
  5. Physical Keys: Losing keys is a hassle for everyone involved. Switch to keyless entry systems for easy access for guests, cleaners, and yourself. Keep a backup lockbox with a full set of keys in case of emergencies.
