The AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel: Modern Oasis, Local Roots
Whether you’re traveling to Mérida for business or pleasure (or perhaps both), there’s good news for those who want to stay somewhere comfortable and upscale: AKEN Hotels & Resorts, in collaboration with CICLO, has unveiled the relaunch of its second property in Mexico, the AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel.
Situated in one of Mexico’s safest and fastest-growing cities, this luxurious hotel in Mérida redefines hospitality by blending local authenticity, contemporary design, and, through its partnership with CICLO, environmental responsibility. Offering 136 rooms, including eight AKEN Signature Suites, a rooftop pool, a versatile event space for up to 200 guests, and a locally inspired restaurant, the AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel has been reimagined to better reflect the essence of its destination while creating a truly immersive (and plush) guest experience.
The relaunch of this elegant 4-star hotel is the result of AKEN’s accelerated growth across the Americas. Known for operating properties in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Mexico, the Miami-based brand is currently working on 11 additional projects in the region. The Mérida hotel is central to that expansion and embodies AKEN’s philosophy of offering an international hospitality experience that is both flexible and deeply tied to the local community.
Renovating the AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel
Located on Prolongación Paseo Montejo within the MID Center commercial development, the hotel is strategically positioned just 10 minutes from downtown Mérida and is just 20 minutes from the Mérida International Airport. Its central location makes it an ideal base for travelers to explore the city’s historic landmarks and vibrant culture, while its redesigned facilities cater to leisure and business travelers alike.
The recent renovation, spearheaded by AKEN’s parent company, AMEK Group, underscores the brand’s commitment to creating unique spaces that harmonize with their environment. The transformation of the hotel’s public areas, including the lobby, rooftop pool, restaurant, and terrace, focuses on integrating the four essential elements of life – fire, water, air, and earth – into its design.
Indoor gardens, water fountains, bonfires, and adaptable furniture are strategically placed to create a natural and tranquil atmosphere while encouraging social interaction and comfort.
Impeccable Architecture and Design
Marina Thärigen, Director of Architecture and Interior Design at AKEN describes the hotel as a place where beauty, harmony, and local authenticity converge.
“What truly makes this hotel unique is its ability to balance beauty and harmony with a sense of local authenticity,” she explains. “Every detail reflects the values of AKEN MIND, which aims to offer a type of luxury that is discreet yet deeply connected to local culture and nature.”
Incorporating traditional Yucatán design elements, the hotel partnered with regional artisans and brands to create a distinct visual identity. Striking Henequén lamps, lush greenery, and handcrafted furniture greet you in the lobby, setting the tone for a sensory-rich experience. Collaborations with Casa Naranja and GDL Taller Carpintería, both local carpenters specializing in sustainable and high-quality materials, resulted in custom furniture pieces that blend contemporary design with traditional techniques. Additionally, handcrafted rugs, sculptures, and tapestries adorn the spaces, adding depth and authenticity to the décor.
Locally Sourced Luxury and Sustainability
The hotel’s commitment to sustainability and community integration extends to every detail. In-room amenities include toiletries and skincare products by Yucatan Senses, crafted by local artisans to support nearby communities and made entirely chemical-free. Even the scents that perfume the lobby and guest rooms are created by a local brand specializing in natural fragrances, featuring a custom blend of woods and citrus designed specifically for the hotel. These partnerships not only highlight the region’s craftsmanship but also align with AKEN’s goal of reducing its environmental footprint.

The “mile zero” initiative, a cornerstone of AKEN’s philosophy, ensures that materials, products, and services are sourced from within a one-mile radius whenever possible. Uniforms, artwork, and even furniture are produced by local vendors, reinforcing the hotel’s role as a community partner. Sustainability practices such as waste reduction, water conservation, and energy-efficient operations further enhance its eco-conscious approach. Throughout the project, CICLO’s expertise in environmental services, logistics, and real estate development proved to be an invaluable resource.
“The renovation was a journey that required extensive planning and close collaboration with local artisans and businesses,” Thärigen notes. “The goal was always to honor and highlight the local character of Yucatán while giving the hotel a modern touch aligned with the values of AKEN Mind.”
Connecting Guests with Mérida’s Cultural Heritage
The AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel does a great job of celebrating its deep connection to the city’s rich history and culture, too. Founded in 1542, Mérida is renowned for its historic architecture and cultural significance, making it a popular destination for travelers.
The hotel’s central location on Prolongación Paseo Montejo offers easy access to iconic landmarks, local markets, and cultural attractions, allowing guests to explore the bustling streets of downtown Mérida, just 10 minutes away, or venture further to discover the natural beauty and history of the Yucatán Peninsula.
The accommodations have also been carefully crafted to reflect the city’s authenticity. Four room types – Signature Suite, Deluxe, Superior, and Superior Plus – are available, each designed to serve as relaxing and comfortable retreats for guests. They also incorporate handcrafted décor and many thoughtful touches that highlight the region’s artistry.
A Culinary and Social Destination
This “think local” aesthetic extends to the hotel’s food and drink offerings, too. In fact, dining at AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel presents a culinary journey inspired by the authentic flavors of the region. The hotel’s restaurant provides a comprehensive menu, from a generous breakfast buffet to curated lunch and dinner options, while for those on the go, a “Grab-and-Go” service delivers quick yet delicious meals tailored to busy explorers and business travelers.

The rooftop bar elevates the dining experience still further with handcrafted cocktails served against the backdrop of Mérida’s skyline. At night, this space transforms into a chic urban oasis, ideal for unwinding after a day of exploration.
And when it’s time to unwind, the rooftop pool, another standout feature, offers a tranquil space for guests to relax and soak up the sun while enjoying panoramic views of the city.
Events and Celebrations
The AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel focuses on versatility and offers event spaces for corporate and social gatherings. Three private venues, including a meeting room, a terrace, and a salon, can accommodate a variety of occasions, from intimate gatherings to events for up to 150 people. The adaptable design of these spaces ensures a seamless experience, blending functionality with the hotel’s serene ambiance.
For local residents and visitors alike, the hotel’s AKEN Lifestyle Event program further enriches its offerings. Workshops and events focusing on gastronomy, wellness, and culture provide opportunities for meaningful connections and experiences. These programs are a testament to the hotel’s dedication to fostering a sense of community and creating unforgettable moments for its guests.
The relaunch of AKEN Mind Mérida Hotel is a reflection of AKEN’s vision for innovative, community-centered hospitality. By integrating local artisanship, sustainable practices, and thoughtful design, the hotel creates a unique experience that bridges luxury with a healthy dose of cultural authenticity.
