Alan Parsons Live Project Set for Mérida in October
Long before he ever stepped in front of a microphone, Alan Parsons was the guy behind the glass, shaping the sound of two of rock’s most enduring albums. Now the 77-year-old engineer-turned-bandleader is bringing his own catalog to Mérida this fall, part of a Mexican tour stop at Foro GNP Seguros.
Parsons first made his name as an engineer on the Beatles’ Abbey Road before going on to engineer Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, one of the best-selling albums in history. Those credits gave him a reputation in the industry years before he became a bandleader in his own right.
In the mid-1970s, Parsons teamed with songwriter and producer Eric Woolfson to form The Alan Parsons Project, a studio collaboration built around lush, orchestral arrangements and science-fiction and literary themes. The pairing produced a run of radio staples, including Eye in the Sky, Games People Play, Time and Don’t Answer Me. Another track, Sirius, became familiar to sports fans worldwide as the entrance music for the Chicago Bulls during their championship years in the 1990s.
Woolfson died in 2009, and Parsons has continued performing that catalog with a rotating lineup of musicians and singers under the banner Alan Parsons Live Project, distinct from the original studio-only Project. He’s earned multiple Grammy nominations over his career, and the current tour promises the hits alongside deeper cuts for longtime listeners.
Concertgoers unfamiliar with the act’s back catalog can expect a night heavier on musicianship and atmosphere than on rock-show spectacle — closer to a symphonic set than a stripped-down rock trio, built around vocal harmonies, keyboard textures and extended instrumental passages.
The Mérida date is one stop on a broader Latin American run for the band this fall, with the group also playing Querétaro on Oct. 21. It adds to a busy season of touring acts making stops in the region — a run that also includes this year’s Xmatkuil fair headliners — part of Mérida’s growing pull as a stop for international performers, not just acts on the festival circuit. It follows a broader wave of major tours making stops in Mexico this year, from classic rock veterans to current pop stars.
For readers who know Parsons only as a name in liner notes, the Mérida stop offers a chance to see one of the era’s most influential — if lower-profile — figures take the stage himself, backed by a band built to recreate four decades of studio polish live.
