Candelaria, Campeche — Noting that Mexico consumes more of the product than it grows, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador vowed to restore rice production in Campeche.

The president’s visit to Candelaria, on the Guatemalan border, focused on agrarian issues. He also announced livestock credits, of allowing the farmers to purchase heifers and stallions on an interest-free basis.

At a rally, jubilant supporters presented two geese to Lopez Obrador, who posed next to the birds and even caressed them.

The geese were released and walked for a few seconds with the president, who asked his assistants to take care of them.

Two members of the presidential staff held the birds in their arms, while others continued collecting documents that people gave to the president.

Lopez Obrador called for unity, noting that the electoral campaign had already passed.

“We are not going to continue fighting, we do not win anything, we fought to carry out the Fourth Transformation, now we are working on that,” said Lopez Obrador.

On the rice crops, AMLO noted that 90 percent of Mexico’s rice is imported. Why not produce what we consume, the president suggested to the crowds.
