Art show celebrates the Centro

Gemma Ruiz Espinosa’s exploration of the Centro is on view.

Mérida, Yucatán —The heritage of the Centro Histórico is celebrated with an exhibit at UNAM’s Santa Lucia campus on Calle 60.

“A Look at Colonial Merida,” by the visual artist Gemma Ruiz Espinosa, opens with a reception Friday.

The importance of rescuing the historic center’s heritage arises from appreciating its value, says Ruiz, who sees the area as a “living museum.”

The artist, who graduated from the UADY with a visual arts degree, presents this installation composed of 39 pieces, after investigating the state of the neighborhoods that make up the Center of the city.

The center of Merida is one of the most important and largest historic neighborhoods in Mexico. Many homes here are abandoned and in ruins, while others have been restored and modernized, often by foreigners but also, increasingly, by nationals.

The work focuses on the neighborhoods of Santa Ana, Santiago and San Sebastián.

An opening reception for  “A Look at the Colonial Merida” is 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4. The show will be on view until Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Centro Cultural Santa Lucía, Calle 60, No.. 469 between Calle 53 and Calle 55, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
