Merida, Yucatan – Celebrating 10 years of promoting local artisans, AANY AC presents the 2018 Arte a Mano, one of the most anticipated crafts shows in Merida.

More than 80 artisans from the Yucatan Peninsula have been invited to present their crafts.

AANY (Friends of the Artists / New Crafts of Yucatan) is a nonprofit civil association that promotes local crafts and artisans. They offer a platform for them to promote their works.

Under the leadership of Viridiana Lagunas, Arturo Novelo and Cristina R. de León, AANY works to achieve the objectives of increasing the public’s support, both Mexican and international, in developing comprehensive programs.

AANY was founded in 2008 by Joan Farrell, who has worked to identify artists creating original and high-quality work.

After starting with 22 artists in a one-day program, this year AANY proudly exhibits the work of 82 artists, many of whom rely on sales from the event as a large part of their annual income. Many shop, gallery and hotel owners attend Arte a Mano to order merchandise for re-sale.

Another of the show’s objectives is to introduce between 10 and 15 new artists. During the year the AANY committee travels throughout the peninsula to identify new artists, who stand out for the quality in their execution and use of materials, as well as in the development of unique and innovative products.

Some of the new artists are:

  • Irene Manzanero, wooden jewelry
  • Marco Cataño, wire and other recycled materials
  • Bartolomeo Dzul de Becal, jipi-japa
  • Francisco Giner, Paquímé and Ticul Ceramics

Arte a Mano is open to the public and admission is free.

It starts Friday, Dec. 7, 5-7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8 and 9, from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Once again, the artisans will set up at the Canaco Convention Center (map), Calle 31, between Avenida Itzáes and Calle 34, three blocks south of Clinica Merida.
