Merida’s international airport is gradually coming back.

Under Yucatan’s Economic and Tourism Reactivation Plan, the state government and ASUR, the airport manager, has been working to restore air connectivity knocked out by coronavirus contingencies.

In September, American Airlines will return to offering a Miami-to-Mérida route, Yucatan’s tourism department said.

Flights to Houston, as well as Toronto and Havana, will also eventually return, officials said, offering no set date.

The process of building back Yucatan’s airport began in June, when flights started to trickle in. As of August, 42% of its domestic flights have been restored.

Volaris, the low-cost airline with the largest number of routes to Yucatan, reactivated Merida’s flights between Monterrey, Guadalajara and Tijuana, in addition to its route to Mexico City.

The other budget airline, Interjet, opened two daily flights from Mexico City to Merida, doubling the weekly frequency to 14 flights. Aeroméxico, on its Mexico City-to-Merida route, increased from 33 to 40 weekly flights as of August, while Viva Aerobus has activated 18 weekly flights to Merida from Mexico City, Villahermosa and Monterrey.
