Mérida, Yucatán — City authorities are trumpeting their crackdown on illegal billboards. On social media Saturday, the Ayuntamiento de Mérida shared photos of a retail plaza on the prolongación de Paseo de Montejo and Circuito Colonias.
Suspension notices have replaced a cluster of garish rooftop signs at Plaza Montejo, considered part of the Zona de Conservación del Patrimonio Cultural, referring to conservation of cultural heritage.
In December, a citywide crackdown on illegal billboards was publicized by the city Department of Urban Development. Published photos of espectaculares coming down at the Prolongación and Plaza Villas La Hacienda, a major intersection. But by January, billboards were back in place on the shopping plaza.
Previous campaigns against illegal billboards have hit the Altabrisa and San Carlos neighborhoods.
