Mérida, Yucatán — A citywide crackdown on illegal billboards began last week, the city Department of Urban Development announced.
The first of the many espectaculares to come down Wednesday night was on a shopping plaza roof near the Paseo de Montejo underpass.
Another was on the corner of Prolongación Paseo de Montejo and Plaza Villas La Hacienda.
Federico José Sauri Molina, head of Urban Development, said about 350 road signs had been installed without permission, degrading the city’s image and sense of heritage.
