“Ixcanul” is Guatemala’s first film submission to the Academy Awards. Called a “stunning debut” for the director, the title translates roughly to “volcano” in the Mayan language of Kaqchikel. It is the story of two strong indigenous Mayan women, mother and daughter.
This dream-like depiction of life on a coffee plantation at the base of an active volcano is enjoying a near 100 percent critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film includes English subtitles. Read about it here. And here.
And because Cine-Cena pairs films and food, here’s what’s being served: Pupusas Revueltas, Tamales Guatemaltecas and Platanos Rellenitos. Plus a beer, glass of wine or a refresco. 140 pesos
