Movie night at Il Caffé, a charming Italian restaurant on a pedestrian road behind the Peón Contreras theater. Have dinner on your own at 6 to enjoy a free movie, aimed at English-speaking audiences, at 7.
This week’s feature is the multiple award-winning film from Iceland, “Woman at War” (2018), the story of environmental activist Halla and her solitary battle against the local aluminum industry.
Superbly acted by Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, who plays Halla as well as her twin sister Asa, and a Greek chorus that pops up from time to time to lighten the mood. A delightful film, it was Iceland’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language film for the 2018 Oscars, as well as the recipient of 23 wins and 13 nominations at international film festivals, including Cannes, Hamburg, Montreal, Portland and San Luis Obispo.
“In case you’re not familiar with Icelandic cinema, I have found their films to be delightfully tongue-in-cheek, with lots of subtle humor and comic relief,” says Nic Lavroff, who organizes the weekly movie night.
