This week brings us the winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2018:
“Shoplifters,” by multiple award winner Irokazu Koreeda, creator of such masterpieces as “Like Father, Like Son” (2013), “Still Walking” (2008), and “Nobody Knows” (2004). The recipient of 44 awards and 84 nominations at international film festivals, including a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2018 Oscars, “Shoplifters” explores what it means to be family by following a collection of adults and children unrelated by blood but connected by a common cause, in this case, the need to survive in an uncaring urban environment.
