The Artscool Program at Caimede Children’s Home exhibits their creative work and offers it for sale at La Galería Eskalera, Calle 70 No. 474B, between 57 and 59, in Mérida’s Santiago neighborhood. All the proceeds go directly to the students. The show opens with a reception 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14.
The artistas are one class of many at Artscool at Caimede Orphanage. These very talented and motivated young students were hand selected and asked to be in the Artista class. Their work has proved to be amazing and the students are very excited about having their own show. A few still can’t believe that this is really going to happen. One keeps asking whose work they’re going to see. He can’t believe that his work will be featured.
The goal of the Artista class is to teach fine and traditional art, help kids tap into their creative side and more importantly to gain confidence. They also hope to help integrate them into school, jobs and housing. All proceeds from the show will go to the students with the ultimate goal of community awareness, mentoring and sponsorship of students who have left or are close to leaving Caimede.
The students will be introduced to some of Mérida’s finer artists at a private artist studio tour the night before the show. Many of these children have never seen finer works of art.
We will be visiting the studios of: Vivianna Hinojosa, Manual Taure, Rudolpho Baeza, Aura Meztli, Alma Citlalli and Abel Vazquez, and Cy Bor and Donna Spadafora
A few of the above artists will be teaching young artistas on a rotating basis. The current artista class is lead by talented volunteers Donna Spadafora, Ligia Solis and Nahomi Ximenez
Besides the show and private artist tour the students and the above mentioned professional artists will be treated to a private dinner at Dadaumpa Restaurant sponsored by Colleen & Art Gosselin from Patriot Heating and Cooling.
A few VIPs are also expected to be attending the Artista show. Artscool at Caimede Orphanage is entering its third year of operation and is under the Yucatan Giving Outreach umbrella.
Dolorfin is sponsoring wine, beverages and snacks at the art show. Mike Bones will provide pizza bites.
