Campeche begins construction on light rail to connect city and Tren Maya
Local authorities in Campeche have announced the commencement of construction on the new Light Rail project, which will link the city’s Historic Center to the Tren Maya station. Spanning 15 kilometers with 14 planned stations, the project aims to enhance transportation infrastructure in the region and drive economic and tourism growth.
Monterrey is the only other city in Mexico with this type of transportation system.
The Campeche Light Rail, funded with a 5-billion-peso investment from Fonatur, is designed to address traffic congestion while providing a modern, efficient transportation option for residents and visitors. The route will start at the Tren Maya station, pass through key locations such as the airport, and culminate at the Historic Center of Campeche.
Features and Benefits of the Light Rail
Unlike traditional trains, the Light Rail is a DRT-type tram featuring three-car trains tailored to meet the mobility needs of the population. It will incorporate various safety and containment systems along different sections of its route to ensure a secure and efficient transit experience.
The 14 stations along the route will serve strategic locations, including the Historic Center Terminal, Guadalupe Neighborhood, Galerías, and the Airport. These stops are expected to serve both locals and tourists.
Scheduled Completion
The project is on track to open in August 2025, promising to revolutionize public transportation in San Francisco de Campeche. With its modern design and focus on accessibility, the Campeche Light Rail is poised to reduce traffic congestion and boost economic and tourism development.
