CTV reports that a Canadian tourist, Zoltan Zadori, drowned Wednesday while on vacation in Cancun. He and his wife, Cindy McPherson, were in the water together when they were swept out to sea.

“The waves were really strong and they kept going over our heads and pulling us out further,” CTV quoted McPherson as saying.

When the couple realized they were in trouble, they signaled for help from two on duty lifeguards, who were able to pull the couple to shore. Rescue workers were unable to resuscitate Zadori, who was pronounced dead shortly after, CTV reported.

The Kitchener, Ontario, couple was staying at the Grand Oasis Sens resort in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

A separate report said that red flags were posted on that resort’s beach that day, indicating dangerous surf conditions.

Zadori, a 50-year-old truck driver, had two adult children from a previous marriage.
