Ending an eight-day trip, Lisa Friedman got a big sendoff at the Cancun airport on Sunday. Bigger than she could ever have expected.

Friedman was the airport’s 25 millionth passenger for 2018. She was serenaded by mariachi and got her photo in the newspapers.

The New York native had traveled with her husband Joe, daughters Samantha and Sara, as well as four friends.

Friedman returned the favor with a nice quote:

“I feel very happy to receive this distinction, since after eight visits to the destination I consider the Quintana Roo people to be attentive, kind people, the food is delicious and I hope to return next year in the company of my family,” said Friedman.

Despite violence and negative press, Cancun saw an expansion of its airline routes, making it easier for people from different parts of the world to visit.

In 2018 alone, 30 new routes were added to Cancun International Airport, with the majority coming from the United States, Germany, Russia, Canada, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Belgium.

Cancun International Airport reported a 6.9 percent increase in travelers compared to 2017, and prepared for one million passengers for the holiday season alone.

The new routes included those from Torreon and Palenque, Mexico; Moscow and Domodedovo, Russia; Medellin, Colombia; Richmond, Va.; Des Moines, Iowa, and Liege Bierset, Belgium.

Most U.S. citizens travel to Cancun from Austin, Chicago, Columbus, Indianapolis, Lansing, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Francisco and Newark. Most German passengers fly from Munich. For Russia, most travelers come from Vnukovo, while Canada’s top city for Cancun travel is Windsor.
