Cancun International Airport will reopen Terminal 2 on Tuesday to keep up with tourist demand, said the management company in charge of the complex.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste said international flights will continue to use Terminal 4.

But two of Mexico’s domestic airlines, Viva Aerobús and Volaris, will be moved to the older Terminal 2 to help spread out travelers and prevent crowds.

The decision was driven by the need to comply with government-mandated health standards. Terminal 2 was one of the airport’s busiest before the pandemic.

The reopening of the 22-gate terminal will include screening questionnaires and temperature-taking at departures and arrivals.

Terminals 2 and 3 closed in early April after an 80% reduction in passenger traffic. Terminal 1 handles charter flights.

Almost 70,000 tourists have visited Cancun since the resort city reopened for tourism almost a month ago, according to municipal tourism official Francisco López.

Mexico does not require visitors to self-quarantine or go through any testing upon arrival, making Cancun one of the most popular tourist destinations right now.
