An estimated 1,000 cars formed a caravan from the state Congress to the Monumento a la Patria this morning to demand President Andrés Manuel Lopéz Obrador resign.
The protest on the Paseo de Montejo is part of a national movement from the National AntiAMLO Front, or Frena. Organizers stayed in cars to avoid the spread of coronavirus.
The president is due in Merida next week to check on progress made in building the Mayan Train, one of his more divisive pet projects.
Organizer Ricardo Mendoza Elizondo called on all citizens “to defend their homeland. We need to be participatory, full-time citizens, so that Mexico can once again become one of the Mexicans and not of a political party.”
He told reporters that AMLO, as he is known, is following a “Communist” agenda.
The vehicles, whose drivers donned protective face masks and honked their horns, were affixed with banners that read “Andrés López, in Yucatan we don’t love you” and “#AMLOveteYA.” a
The protest was mirrored in 70 cities in the country Acapulco, Aguascalientes, Cancun, Ciudad Juárez, Mexico City, Chihuahua, Culiacán, León, Oaxaca, Querétaro, Tampico, Tijuana, Xalapa and Zacatecas, said organizers.
In Mexico City, a convoy of vehicles left the National Auditorium at 10 a.m. and advanced on Paseo de la Reforma until reaching the National Palace, where dozens of dissatisfied citizens express their rejection of the policies applied by the Mexican president.
On social networks, hashtags #FueraAmlo and #MéxicoNoTeQuiereAMLO were trending Saturday.
Frena said a demonstration in Houston, Texas will be organized Sunday in front of the Mexican Consulate.
