Mérida, Yucatán — Avenida Colón, the backbone of the García Ginerés neighborhood, has been a reference point for decades, not just in the city, but in the entire state.

The avenue, which begins at the Miguel Hidalgo roundabout and ends at the Paseo de Montejo, is lined with many centenary trees and grand casonas that have withstood countless storms, both metaphorical and real.

Its proximity to the hotel zone has brought it growing attention from both national and foreign visitors. Some casonas, or mansions, will actually join the city’s roster of new lodging. Others are offices. But a few appear forgotten and fading, waiting for someone to see their potential and rescue them from further deteriorating.
