CFE blames worker shortage on guestimated electric bills

Merida, Yucatan — A worker shortage connected to the coronavirus lockdown led the CFE to issue electric bills without tracking actual power usage by reading the meters, said Profeco, the government watchdog agency.

Profeco’s Merida office has received 165 complaints, mainly from businesses that have been closed for two months, but received inflated power bills.

The local Profeco director, Sisely Burgos Cano, said energy tariffs were not increased.

“Collection was made based on estimates; the CFE has personnel in confinement (to avoid) COVID-19, because they are workers considered to be in a vulnerable population,” she said.

Burgos Cano invited CFE customers to visit Profeco’s CFE module with complaints.

Profeco’s Centro office is on Calle 49 No. 479-A, at 54 and 56, Centro, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. Call 800-468-8722.
