Chichén Itzá Airport set to compete with Tulum and Cancún in 2025
Chichén Itzá Airport in Kaua is preparing to compete with Tulum and Cancún airports in 2025 with the anticipated arrival of its first two commercial airlines, according to airport director José Miguel García Vales.
Currently, Chichen Itza Airport exclusively serves private flights carrying tourists from Quintana Roo and other parts of Mexico, handling a mere 1,000 passengers annually.
The airport management is well-positioned to establish connections with tourism promoters and airlines from Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States. The airport is just 10 minutes from the Chichén Itzá archaeological site, 30 minutes from Valladolid, one hour from Izamal, 1.5 hours from Mérida, two hours from Progreso/s port, 1.4 hours from Cancún, two hours from Playa del Carmen, 2.5 hours from Cozumel, and two hours from Tulum.
The airport’s development is supported by the state economic and tourism agencies, regional business chambers including Coparmex and Canaco, and the operating company Servicios Aéreos Ciclo, a consortium led by José Antonio Loret de Mola Gómory.
In related news, Tulum International Airport has exceeded expectations in its first year of operation, becoming the second busiest airport in Quintana Roo, with over one million passengers and 8,500 flight operations.
“The International Air Transport Association projected we would receive 700,000 passengers in this first year; however, thanks to our collaborative efforts, vision, and commitment, we have far surpassed that goal—and we still have a month left in the year,” said Gov. María Lezama.
