Mérida, Yucatán — Mexico’s largest cinema empire has big plans in Mérida which are not limited to the newer neighborhoods.
Cinépolis has purchased a three-story building in the historic center which they plan to remodel and bring “vitality to one of the most neglected areas of the Centro,” according to Sipse.
Meanwhile, another new complex will soon rise in Caucel,” said Ernesto Herrera Novelo, secretary economic secretary.
The movie multiplex company is also building new complexes at Plaza Akrópolis in Las Americas and at the new mega malls under construction: The Harbor in Via Montejo and La Isla at Cabo Norte. It’s already established elsewhere in Las Americas and at the Altabrisa mall, Plaza Kukulcán and Plaza Sendero.
But to remodel any of the buildings of the Historic Center the company must obtain permits from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The address of their new building was not published.
Cinépolis has 214 theaters in 97 cities. It is the largest chain in Latin America and the fourth largest in the world, with nearly 30,000 employees throughout Mexico, the United State, Central and South America, Spain and India.
Their rival Cinemex operates a historic theater off Parque Santiago.
