Cold front whips up beaches, knocks down trees and poles
Merida, Yucatan — Strong winds, flooding and heavy rain from today’s Cold Front No. 31 brought down trees and power lines everywhere.
The state police are busy clearing roads blocked by branches and electrical wires.
In the city, wind ranges of north component of between 53 and 66 kilometers per hour and 66 kilometers/33 and 42 miles per hour are reported.
On the coast, the wind is even worse, with gusts up to 80 kph/50 mph. Sand is reportedly whipping past the malecon.
Vendors and restaurant workers ran to grab their outdoor tables. Such was the spectacle that the storm attracted photographers.
With waves up to 4 meters, boating was prohibited on the Gulf and ports were closed.
The storm will end this afternoon, but cool overnight temperatures, as low as 10C/50F, are predicted to continue for the next few days.
