Yucatan health authorities reported 96 new coronavirus infections, surpassing Friday’s record number by six. Twelve died from the virus, one fewer than the day before.
That brings to 3,006 the number of coronavirus cases in Yucatan since the crisis began in mid-March. Of those, 363 have died.
Doctors said that 70 of the new infections were found in Merida, as well as four in Tizimín; three in Kanasín and Umán; two in Tahmek and Tecoh; and one each in Conkal, Dzan, Hoctún, Ixil (its first case), Izamal, Maxcanú, Motul, Progreso, Sucilá, Tekit, Ticul and Valladolid.
A 51-year-old Merida woman with diabetes was the youngest to die, followed by a 58-year-old Tekax man with hypertension, chronic kidney failure and diabetes; a 59-year-old man from Akil, with the same conditions and three contacts who have presented mild symptoms; a 60-year-old Merida woman with asthma and one contact with mild symptoms.
A 60-year-old man from Mérida with obesity; a 60-year-old man from Mérida with hypertension, chronic kidney failure and diabetes; a 61-year-old woman from Peto with hypertension and obesity, a 61-year-old man from Timucuy with obesity, a 63-year-old man from Chemax with diabetes, a 66-year-old man from Calkiní with diabetes, a 67-year-old man from Mérida with hypertension, and a woman 79, cancer, from Mérida, also perished.
Since the virus came to Yucatan, 2,288 coronavirus patients have beat the illness, including 60 in the past 24 hours, for a 74% recovery rate.
Among active cases, 174 patients are stable and at home. The hospital has admitted the other 181, five fewer than Friday. It is unknown how many of those five died or recovered.
Additionally, Merida has tightened access to the huge mercados in the city center as a precaution against infection. Children and shoppers over 60, considered most vulnerable to coronavirus, are prohibited from entering San Benito or Lucas de Gálvez markets.
Sanitary checkpoints have been in place since the markets re-opened last week.
