COVID-19 infections appear to spike due to 3-day undercount

The coronavirus caseload shot up today when 87 more people were found to be infected, Yucatan health authorities reported today. Six more perished.

The spike was attributed to 47 IMSS cases that were not reported in the previous 72 hours. Those patients were included in the current 24-hour total. Since the crisis began, 276 people in Yucatan have died from COVID-19.

Of the new infections, 42 are from Mérida, 13 from Tekax, 7 from Hunucmá and Kanasín, in addition to three in Umán and Tecoh, among others.

In total, there are 2,299 positive cases of coronavirus in the state, of which 1,788 are already recovered, including 13 in the last 24 hours.

Active COVID-19 cases include 71 recuperating at home and 164 in the hospital, eight more than the day before.

The age range of positive cases is one month to 94 years.

A 35-year-old Merida man with immunosuppression was the youngest to die. A 47-year-old Merida man also perished, as did a 51-year-old woman from Kanasín with hypertension and diabetes, a 72-year-old woman from Tixméhuac with COPD and diabetes, an 80-year-old woman from Tecoh who also suffered from hypertension and diabetes and an 85-year-old Huhí man who suffered from COPD and smoked cigarettes.
