A drastic increase in COVID-19 cases was announced when 203 new cases were disclosed Wednesday by Yucatan health authorities.
That is by far the largest number of new cases in 24 hours for the state. Until Monday, 95 new infections in a day was considered alarming. Then on Tuesday, 106 new cases were announced, but 80 of those were attributed to a 72-hour lag in recordkeeping.
This brings to 3,555 the number of infections in Yucatan. Of those patients, 2,558 or 72% have recovered including 82 in today’s report.
Of the new cases, 159 were in Mérida; seven in Kanasín; five each in Umán and Valladolid; four in Ticul and Tizimin; two in Maxcanú, Motul, Uayma, Xocchel and from outside the state; as well as one each in Acanceh, Halachó, Hunucmá, Muna, Peto, San Felipe, Telchac Puerto, Tinum and Tixkokob.
Fatalities did not follow the spike. Nine patients died from coronavirus, slightly below the previous six-day average of 11.2 daily fatalities. Since the crisis began, 393 have died from coronavirus in Yucatan.
A 48-year-old Kanasín man was the youngest to perish, followed by a 65-year-old woman from Mérida; a 68-year-old woman from Mérida; a 68-year-old man from Mérida; a 72-year-old woman from Kanasín; a 77-year-old man from Mérida; a 77-year-old man from Mérida; and two 81-year-old women from Mérida. All but two had suffered from hypertension, diabetes or another medical complication.
Current cases include 384 patients at home in stable condition and 219 in the hospital, four more than the day before.
