One of the World’s Most Endangered Foxes Gets a Last Chance on Cozumel
For years, the story of the Cozumel fox was one of whispers and shadows. We are not talking quite Bigfoot levels, but still.
Mentioned in academic footnotes and local lore, this tiny canid, believed to be a dwarf species unique to the island of Cozumel, Mexico, had seemingly vanished.
With no confirmed sightings for decades and no photographic proof of its existence, the scientific community feared that this ghost of the Caribbean had slipped away without ever being formally recognized by the world.
But in a surprising twist that rewrites conservation timelines, the fox has been found again, just as it faces its greatest threats.
In 2023, a chance encounter on a roadside changed everything. Researchers and local park authorities in Cozumel received reports of a disoriented animal near the coastal highway. Upon investigation, they discovered an adult male fox, later identified as the elusive Cozumel dwarf fox.
This marked the first photographic evidence of the creature in modern history and the first confirmed sighting in over two decades. The animal, which was safely captured, assessed for health, and released into the protective boundaries of the Laguna Colombia State Reserve, provided undeniable proof that this long-rumored population is not a myth, at least, not yet.
However, a photograph is not a recovery plan. Following this rediscovery, the conservation group Pathos Wildlife launched an urgent initiative to address a singular problem: no one knows how many of these foxes remain.
As part of an emergency assessment, the organization recently concluded its first dedicated field expedition on the island. Between March 18th and April 14th, 2026, a research team deployed a massive network of 84 trail cameras across the southern half of Cozumel. It is the largest camera trap deployment ever conducted on the island, designed to penetrate the dense tropical forests and wetlands where the fox hides.
What sets this effort apart is the stakes involved. The Cozumel fox is believed to be an “insular dwarf,” a phenomenon where animals isolated on islands evolve to become significantly smaller than their mainland relatives. Belonging to the genus Urocyon and likely most closely related to the Yucatán gray fox, this Cozumel population is estimated to be 60-80% the size of its mainland counterpart. Yet, despite having roamed the island for potentially thousands of years—possibly predating human settlement—the species has never been formally described. No comprehensive genetic or morphological studies have been conducted. The scientific community largely doesn’t know exactly what it is, how it breeds, or where it travels.
What researchers do know is that the island ecosystem is changing rapidly, and the fox is running out of time. While habitat loss due to vegetation clearing has been relatively contained, the threats of the modern world are closing in.
The expansion of road networks across Cozumel has fragmented the forest, leading to increasing road mortality that impacts endemic wildlife. Invasive species pose an even graver danger. Mainland predators, including feral dogs and ocelots, as well as the introduced Boa constrictor, compete with and prey upon native species, creating an inhospitable environment for a small, dwarfed fox unused to such competition.

Researchers are approaching this mystery with a philosophy guided by technology. Instead of broad, general surveys, the team is using the foxes themselves as the compass. By deploying scent lures alongside high-definition camera traps and planning thermal drone surveys, the strategy is to gather the specific movement data needed to develop proactive protection measures.
The goal of the current project is not just to count individuals, but to determine exactly which patches of the southern forest are critical to the fox’s survival. So far, sightings have been restricted to specific southern ranges near the community of El Cedral, suggesting a distribution that may be alarmingly small.
The timeline for action is urgent. With the second field season scheduled for July 2026 to retrieve and analyze the accumulated camera data, researchers are racing against the cumulative pressures of invasive species, disease, and environmental change. The rediscovery of the Cozumel fox is not yet a conservation success story; it is a second chance that the world nearly missed.
For now, the hope rests in the pixels of those 84 camera traps and the possibility that this rare canid might have just enough room left to survive.
