Mérida, Yucatán — Two international direct flights have been discontinued for low demand.

Flights from Mérida’s international airport to Dallas, via American Airlines, and to Milan, Italy, via Blue Panorama, will instead connect from Cancun’s much larger airport.

The Dallas flights, which ran five days a week, had since March 2016 to catch on, and flights to Italy began in 2015. But local media reports blame a lack of promotion for their demise.

Miami and Houston are the only other U.S. cities with direct flights to Mérida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport. In Canada, Toronto flies directly to Mérida. Most international flights still connect through the massive Mexico City airport.

An unfavorable exchange rate further discouraged passengers with pesos from visiting abroad.
