Mérida, Yucatán — The planned relocation of street vendors in the historic center has surfaced again, starting with the opening of a casona-style house in the heart of the city which will house an average of 70 vendors.
To encourage vendors, many of whom are mothers, the casona will include a daycare center.
Behind closed doors, Mayor Renán Barrera Concha has been meeting with business leaders to find ways to appease vendors who crowd the sidewalks and undercut brick-and-mortar businesses. Authorities and the business establishment have been trying for years to clear the streets of unlicensed vendors in a way that does not create a negative backlash.
About the casona:
- The casona’s daycare center will allow for 60-65 children.
- The property that authorities have in mind is on Calle 63, between 62 and 64.
- The first phase of this project is projected to open in about month and a half.
