December in Mérida hottest since 1987
Mérida, Yucatán — This is supposed to be the “cold season,” but this December is delivering the hottest weather on record since 1987, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures as high as 35.5 degrees Celsius, or almost 96 degrees Fahrenheit, were recorded this month.
The most recent heat wave is attributed to the strong presence of a high-pressure system centered in the Atlantic Ocean, extending to the Gulf of Mexico.
The same system will continue for several days, keeping temperatures about five to eight degrees above the normal high, at least until New Year’s Day.
