Mérida, Yucatán — Social media has been buzzing about new signs outside Altabrisa Plaza posting a schedule of parking fees.

But the city’s mayor said no one is allowed to charge customers without council approval, and he vowed to prevent paid parking at the upscale mall. Public and private parking lots are regulated by the city government.

Rumors have come and gone for years about the mall attempting to charge parking fees. The previous three city administrations have successfully quashed aggressive attempts to charge for parking there.

The rumors are not unfounded. Years ago, the mall installed unactivated ticket machines. Now, there are four signs partially wrapped in plastic. The signs announce a 5-peso fee for the first hour of parking, and 1 peso for every additional hour, plus daily rates of 27 pesos and lost ticket fee of 50 pesos.

Plaza Altabrisa has 200 stores, in addition to a cinema, food court, restaurants, and a gym throughout 100,000 square meters of construction and parking space for more than 3,000 cars, of which 1,600 are located a covered basement area.
