The popular Uber Eats food delivery-app launched a promotion Wednesday that signals the growing competition between two donut shops that weren’t even in Mérida a few years ago.

Together with the multinational Krispy Kreme chain, the application launched its #DonasUberEats promotion, which plans to deliver 160,000 donuts around Mexico for 25 pesos per half-dozen, plus another 25 for delivery.

In addition, each box will come with a pack of little googly-eyes to decorate the donuts, which is apparently a thing some people do. Post the results on Instagram and you’re entered into a contest to win a year of free donuts.

The promotion is underway in Mérida, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana, Monterrey, Puebla, Querétaro, Hermosillo, León and San Luis Potosí.

For years, no well-known donut chains operated in Mérida after a Dunkin Donuts franchise fizzled out. North Carolina-based Krispy Kreme opened to great fanfare in 2015, but then faced competition from Massachusetts-based Dunkin, looking for a second chance two years later. Early last year, Canada’s Tim Hortons announced a Mérida shop, but none have appeared.

For expats, donuts are a taste of home and their preferences can be driven by regional differences.
