As Drag Racing Grows, a Professional Track Opens at X’matkuil
Fairground facility provides safe alternative as motorsport gains popularity across Mexico

A growing community of drag racing enthusiasts in Yucatán now has an official venue to pursue their passion. Over the weekend, the state’s first sanctioned drag strip opened at the X’matkuil fairgrounds.

The new track, built with an investment of more than 2.4 million pesos (US$120,000) in state funds, represents the culmination of a 20-year effort by local racing clubs to secure a legal and safe alternative to street racing.

The facility features a 402-meter (1,320-foot) racing surface with paved access roads, safety barriers, solar LED lighting, electronic starting signals, and a gravel buffer zone. The track benefits more than 5,600 people and is expected to attract visitors from Mérida and beyond while boosting the local economy.

Ramón Ortiz Estrada, president of Aceleración Mérida Club, called the opening a dream come true after decades of advocacy. “The drag racers feel proud,” he said during Saturday’s ceremony. “This is a dream of more than 20 years, and today we can be proud to find ourselves at the X’matkuil drag strip, the cathedral of drag racing in the southeast.”

Motorsport Culture Takes Root

The investment reflects the growing popularity of automotive culture and motorsports across Mexico, where drag racing has evolved from informal gatherings to organized events attracting thousands of spectators. The sport has seen explosive growth across Latin America, with major events generating significant economic impact and drawing participants from multiple countries.

Street racing has been cited in several recent crashes leading to serious injuries and deaths in communities from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to major metropolitan areas. The dangers have prompted cities across Mexico and the United States to seek legal alternatives for racing enthusiasts.

Motorsports safety experts emphasize that providing sanctioned facilities is crucial for protecting both participants and innocent bystanders. Professional drag racing facilities incorporate multiple safety features impossible to replicate on public roads, including proper run-off areas, medical personnel on standby, and technical inspections of vehicles.

The X’matkuil track addresses safety concerns while fostering the family-oriented community aspect that has drawn many to the sport. Representatives from local automotive clubs, including Club MOPAR Mérida, 8 Mustangs Club, and Mustang Mérida Club, attended the opening ceremony, highlighting the diverse enthusiast community the facility will serve.

Economic and Social Impact

Alberto Basulto Soberanis, director of the Yucatán Fair Promotion Institute, praised the project’s community-building potential. “This type of activity brings together passion, speed and adrenaline, but also represents unity and sporting spirit among members of that community and their families,” he said.

The track is expected to host regular racing events and competitions, providing recreational opportunities for amateur enthusiasts while potentially attracting more formal motorsports competitions as the sport continues expanding in the region.

The facility joins a broader trend of motorsports infrastructure development across Mexico, where government and private investors recognize the economic potential of automotive events. The global motorsports market is projected to reach $11.65 billion by 2030, with drag racing representing a significant and growing segment.

Building on Infrastructure Momentum

The drag racing facility represents part of Yucatán’s broader commitment to sports and recreational infrastructure development. Earlier projects have included plans for a new multi-purpose stadium in Mérida designed to accommodate both baseball and soccer, demonstrating the state’s investment in diverse sporting venues.

The X’matkuil location is easily accessible from major population centers and offers the space needed for safe racing operations. The facility’s solar LED lighting system and electronic timing equipment meet modern racing standards while emphasizing sustainable practices.

For racing enthusiasts who have spent years traveling to distant facilities or gathering informally, the new track offers a professional venue close to home. The 20-year journey from informal community requests to official facility opening reflects both the persistence of local racing clubs and the growing recognition of motorsports as legitimate recreational and economic activities.

The track is expected to begin hosting regular events within the coming weeks, providing a new outlet for Yucatán’s growing community of automotive enthusiasts.
