Engineering school in Chuburná results from pact with Querétaro

UNAQ, which will expand with a campus in Chuburná, Yucatan.

A Querétaro Aeronautical University campus in Chuburná is one of the first products of a new collaboration between Yucatan’s port city of Progreso and the city of El Marqués, 1,500 km away.

The school, which specializes in the study of aviation, was established in 2006, helping the state of Queretaro grow rapidly into a new hub for the aerospace industry.

El Marqués Mayor Enrique Vega Carriles met his counterpart in Progreso, Mayor Julián Zacarías Curi, for a ceremony that announced the two cities are “twinned.”

The agreement was signed with the objective of carrying out and exchanging economic, cultural, social and sports programs.

El Marqués, population 12,500, forms part of the metropolitan area of Querétaro and has many state-of-the-art industrial parks and is home to Querétaro International Airport, about 90 minutes from San Miguel de Allende.

The Marquesino mayor said that both municipalities share an economic and social dynamism.

“I speak to you convinced that collaboration and synergy between local governments are the fundamental tools to promote the development and growth of our cities, our communities and our population,” said Vega Carriles. “Progreso and El Marqués share a dynamism as few municipalities in Mexico, thanks to its privileged locations, constant diversification of its economies and most importantly, the talent of its people.”

The scope of this agreement includes the development of cultural promotion programs, tourism promotion and information exchange programs.

Also present during the event were Querétaro Secretary of Education Alfredo Botello Montes; the secretary of the City Council of El Marqués, Rodrigo Mesa Jiménez; the university’s rector, Jorge Gutiérrez de Velasco; Yucatan’s secretary of Research, Innovation and Higher Education, Bernardo Cisneros Buenfil; and the City Council of Progreso.

The location and size of the new campus was not disclosed.
